In this talk, I will discuss the variability and change of the global mean surface temperature (GMST) during the past two decades. In particular, I will focus on the rapid warming on interannual time scales during the 1997/1998 and 2015/2016 strong El Nino, and the slowdown of global surface warming during 1998-2012. Our research indicates that the Pacific sea level rise pattern is a good metric of GMST variability and change. Based on the relationship between GMST and Pacific sea level anomalies simulated by a set of climate models, we quantified the contributions of the Pacific Ocean to recent GMST variability and change.
