We are delighted to announce that Dr. Mohammed Hassan has been awarded the Young Investigator Research Program grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Of over 290 proposals, Dr. Hassan's was selected for his anticipated research in Imaging the Ultrafast Dynamics in 2D Graphene. The AFOSR awarded close to $13.9 million in grants this year. This amount was split between 31 scientists/ engineers from 24 different universities and businesses around the country. Dr.

We are excited to announce the newly renovated John R Engel Undergraduate Student Lounge. Located in PAS 268, the lounge is the place to be for all Physics undergraduates looking to study, relax, work in-between classes, or just socialize with their fellow majors. Stop on by and take in the new atmosphere!

We would also like to once again thank John Engel for his continued support of the physics department. This would not have been possible without your help.

On August 17th, we held our annual Freshmen Orientation for Physics majors. We are happy to announce that 2018 marks the largest ever class of incoming freshmen with 60 students.

It is very common to take a STEM class and feel like nothing makes sense. There are hundreds of equations in existence, each more obscure than the last. If you’ve ever felt a similar exasperation, and are wondering what lies at the heart of physics, then we hope you’ll appreciate the department’s new Physics Demo display, found currently on exhibit in the lobby of the PAS building.

The Physics department would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. David Sing, a former student from our department. Dr. Sing, who is now a professor at Johns Hopkins University, is a renowned professor in the field of exoplanets, or planets which exist outside of our solar system. Dr. Sing is currently leading the Hubble Space Telescope's largest research program with regards to exoplanets. Using wavelengths from UV to infrared, this study will look to compare 20 known exoplanets.

The Physics Department Spring 2018 Graduation was celebrated with a ceremony and lunch on Thursday, May 10, 2018. The ceremony, held in the Agnese Nelms Haury Lecture Hall of the ENR2 building on the UA campus, began with a welcome speech by Dr. Sumit Mazumdar, Physics Department Chair. Undergraduate degrees were awarded next, followed by the Masters of Science, Professional Science Masters in Medical Physics, and Doctor of Philosophy in Physics.

The University of Arizona scientists have recently joined the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) collaboration. DUNE will be studying neutrinos and its antiparticle, antineutrinos, with the hope of answering the long-standing question of why the universe is matter dominated. DUNE will also be looking for neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae which will provide crucial information about the formation of neutron stars or black holes.

"Wake up Tucson it's your town, get up and get involved!" This is the introduction to Wake Up Tucson on 1030 KVOI, with Chris DeSimone, a local radio station bringing to light different topics in our community. Recently, Professor Stafford was invited to participate on this morning show, discussing various topics from his life history to his recent research. Most computers use magnetic hard disks to store data. Each bit of information, either "0" or "1", is recorded on magnetic thin films in hard disks. A University of Arizona-led team of physicists has demonstrated an efficient way to control similar magnetic thin films by electric fields.

Many fundamental processes in nature (e.g. photosynthesis, catalysis, metabolism) result from the complex motion of an electron through the potential energy landscape defined by the atomic positions inside the molecule. Prof. Arvinder Sandhu along with graduate student Henry Timmers used extreme ultraviolet, attosecond light bursts to strobe the motion of an electron in a polyatomic molecule and film its coherent evolution near a conical intersection.

The Spring 2017 Department of Physics, Graduation and Award Ceremony was held on Friday, May 12. Please join us in congratulating this year's physics outstanding faculty, staff, and student award winners.

Our faculty award winners are:

As the transistors in computers get smaller and denser to allow for more computing power, the energy demands of computing are growing rapidly. Because of their increasingly volatile nature as they scale down in size, transistors become even more power hungry. The future of computing will require a new solution for the storage and processing of data that does not out pace our energy supply.

Bruce Barrett has contributed forty seven years of Nuclear Physics at the University of Arizona. We would like to invite everyone to congratulate Professor Barrett on his many great accomplishments throughout his career by attending his retirement event. The afternoon will consist of symposiums, guest speakers, and a reception at the ENR2 rooftop.
