The Department of Physics at the University of Arizona hosted the inaugural Fang Li-Zhi Memorial Lecture on Friday, Feb 13, 2026, an event in commemoration of his 90th birthday, Feb. 12, 1936, that blended cutting-edge astrophysics with a moving tribute to one of the most influential figures in modern Chinese history.

The lecture series, established to honor the accomplishments of Prof. Fang, drew a large crowd of students, faculty, and guests both in-person at PAS 201 and via a global Zoom broadcast.

A Life of Science and Courage

Prof. Fang Li-Zhi, widely regarded as the "father of cosmological research in China," was a pioneer who published the first modern cosmological research paper in mainland China in the early 1970s. However, his legacy extends far beyond the stars and the Universe. As a fierce advocate for the democracy movement, his activism eventually led to his and his wife’s exile. He joined the University of Arizona in 1992, where he continued his research until his passing in 2012.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Shufang Su (Physics Department Head), featured remarks from Prof. Elliott Cheu (long time colleague and UA Chief Information Officer) and Prof. Buell Jannuzi (department head of Astronomy Department), followed by an exclusive documentary screening. Because the film has not been released, it was shown only at the event, offering the in-person attendees a rare glimpse into Prof. Fang’s private life and his public struggle for human rights.

Personal Reflections and the Struggle for Voice

The most poignant moments of the afternoon came from the shared stories of colleagues, students, friends, and family members. Speakers detailed not only his scientific brilliance but his unwavering commitment to free speech.

"He fought to ensure that voices were heard when they were being silenced," one speaker remarked. "His life was a testament to the fact that scientific truth and political freedom are inextricably linked."

In a touch of local sentiment, the department shared the history of the memorial tree planted in front of the PAS building. While the original ginkgo tree—a favorite of Prof. Fang’s from his days in Beijing—did not survive the desert heat, it was replaced in May 2016 by a more resilient species, a Red Push Pistache tree. "The original tree may have changed," organizers noted, "but the spirit lives on and continues to grow.”

Beyond the Horizon: The Scientific Keynote

Following the tributes, Regent Professor George Rieke delivered the inaugural scientific lecture titled, "What is Going on Beyond Z=7?" Rieke, a renowned figure in Astronomy and Planetary Sciences, explored the frontiers of the infrared Astronomy, a fitting tribute to Prof. Fang’s own lifelong quest to understand the origins of the cosmos.

Continuing the Conversation

The event concluded with a reception and a special book sale featuring:

  • The Autobiography of Fang Li-Zhi: Available in both Chinese and English.
  • Collected Articles: Two curated volumes exploring his dual achievements in science and social activism.

Attendees were treated to a rare opportunity to have their copies signed by Professor Shuxian Li, Prof. Fang’s widow, and Professor Perry Link, the sole translator of his autobiography.

The Fang Li-Zhi Memorial Lecture is set to become an annual tradition, ensuring that his vision for a world defined by both scientific discovery and human dignity remains at the forefront of the academic community.
