Abstract: As part of the Astro 2020 Decadal Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, a Panel on the State of the Profession and Societal Impacts (SoPSI) was convened. The Panel’s charge was to make actionable suggestions to the Astro 2020 committee on the topics of demographics, diversity and inclusion, workplace climate, workforce development, education, public outreach, benefits to the nation, and relevant areas of astronomy and public policy. This was the first time a decadal survey featured a formal panel devoted to these concerns. In this talk I will review the process through which Appendix N was created and highlight essential goals for the Profession identified by the SoPSI panel to ensure that the full human diversity of the nation can meaningfully and maximally contribute to the field.

• Graduate students will meet with the colloquium speaker for lunch on Thursday, 4/14, at 12:30 PM (AZ Time) in the Steward tea area.
