Abstract: This talk will provide some physical and mathematical motivations underlying the idea of topological phases of matter. Time permitting we will also introduce the Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau mean field model for Quantum Hall effects which motivates what will be discussed in this week's Mathematical Physics seminar.
