Abstract: We use the FIRE-2 cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way-mass parent halos and their subhalos to investigate how well neutral hydrogen gas absorbers trace and can be used to infer dark matter halo masses over redshifts 0 to 3. I will discuss the relationship between the dark matter, stellar, and gas distributions in the parent halos themselves, how well stars and Damped Lyman Alpha absorbers trace the subhalo mass function for masses 108 -1012 M , and what we can learn about halo mass from observing a Damped Lyman Alpha sightline.
