Steward Observatory/NSF’s NOIRLab Joint Colloquium Series: The Future of Astronomical Data Analysis

Peter Melchior, Princeton

When

3:30 – 4:30 p.m., March 14, 2024

Abstract:  In astronomy and cosmology we experience a period of profound changes as the results of two developments: 1) the availability of vast quantities of data, from large surveys and from simulations, and 2) the rapid progress in machine learning, in particular probabilistic modeling. I will discuss projects on spectroscopic analysis, photometric analysis, and image analysis that leverage these two development streams. I will show how we can extract more information from existing observations and optimize the information content of future observations. And I will argue that, to be successful, new methods need to be based on the same level of physical understanding as traditional approaches, which calls for research in specialized machine learning techniques for astronomy.

If you would like to schedule a one-on-one meeting, please fill in your available time and location on the link. Peter is available Monday, March 11 and Thursday, March 14 only.
