Dr. Wing, Bill to his colleagues and friends, was Professor in the Department of Physics and the College of Optical Sciences from 1974 until his retirement in 2011. Bill was an enthusiastic classroom instructor and took great pleasure in teaching some of the larger undergraduate physics courses.

His field of study was Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, and over the years he made many valuable contributions to spectroscopy of atoms and ions. Much respected by his colleagues at Arizona and elsewhere, Bill received international recognition for his scientific achievements, including a  John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship and an Alexander von Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist Award. He was a scientific adviser to the U.S State Department and Environment Protection Agency during a sabbatical year. We will always remember Bill's multifaceted interests and his many contributions to the Physics Department, and will miss him.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to William H. Wing’s family and friends.
