More than 100,000 people visited the 2024 Tucson Festival of Books, for a fun-filled weekend of food, author panels, book signings, and PHYSICS!

The Department of Physics hosted an activity booth at the festival’s popular outreach attraction, Science City. Guests of all ages were treated to an alluring array of hands-on demonstrations exploring waves and interference. Dr. John Schaibley, leading a team of ten volunteers, organized the event. John also designed and built the booth’s star attraction, an electric guitar, function generator, and amplifier, coupled to two oscilloscopes. Festival patrons playing the guitar could see in real-time the sounds they produced, allowing them to rock out and broaden their scientific knowledge at the same time. Other demonstrations included thin film interference, a resonating water bowl, and the always popular Chladni plate.

The physics booth was a tremendously popular addition to this year's Science City exhibits. Very special thanks go out to all the hard-working volunteers for sharing their love and knowledge of physics: Jeremy Philbrick, Keita Maekawa, Keenan Fiedler, Andrew Jei-li Tsai, Charlotte Zehnder, Mark Coopershlyak, Pritam Kumar, Kyle Rine, Oskar Novak, Dr. Sam Krishnamurthy, and Dr. John Schaibley.
