Abstract: This summer, I helped coordinate the UA’s Tucson Initiative for Minority Engagement in Science and Technology Program (TIMESTEP) internship program. This program placed seven undergraduate interns from the astronomy and physics departments in small- to medium-sized technology companies around the Tucson area for the summer. The experiences the interns and I had might be helpful to those wishing to pursue a career outside of academia. Thus, I would like to share with you what I learned about (1) the types of careers physicists can pursue in the tech sector and (2) the types of opportunities that exist in Southern Arizona. I hope this overview can be instructive to grad students at any stage.
