Alumni Kelly Ryan, NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory

Join us for a Zoom Virtual Experience with our guest speaker, Kelly Ryan, a hurricane scientist with NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) as she discusses the importance of collecting data during Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance missions, when she regularly flies onboard NOAA's P-3 aircraft as it flies directly into the eye of a hurricane to survey its characteristics. Kelly will illustrate the life of a scientist during a typical reconnaissance taski ng, showcas ing the invaluable instrumentation and science conducted at AOML towards improving the prediction of tropical cyclones and their associated hazards. Kelly will also describe exceptional circumstances during times when hurricanes may affect Florida. Tropical cyclones introduce impacts that extend beyond destructive flooding, winds, and severe weather. The effects of these systems unfold beneath the ocean surface as the mixing of water changes the composition and temperature that ecosystems must adapt to. Kelly is scheduled to speak with us on Wednesday, September 9, as long as there is no tropical cyclone on the radar. In the event of severe weather, Kelly's backup date is Wednesday, September 23. Fingers crossed that Kelly has plenty of time to speak with our group this hurricane season!
