NSF's mission is to advance the progress of science, a mission accomplished by funding proposals for research and education made by scientists, engineers, and educators from across the country.

The first results of imaging the black hole at the Galactic center will be announced by a group of individuals that includes Sera Markoff, my former graduate student here in Physics, now a Professor at the University of Amsterdam. The concept behind this work, creating the Event Horizon Telescope, was developed by my group here in our department 20 years ago, with the participation of several students including Sera.
