Requirements

A minor in Physics has the following requirements:

  • Minor GPA of at least a 2.000
  • Minimum of 19 units
  • Minimum of 6 units of upper-division coursework
  • Minimum of at least 3 units of minor coursework completed at the University of Arizona

Physics minors will need to complete the following Introductory Physics courses:

  • PHYS 141 or 161H – Introduction to Mechanics
  • PHYS 142 or 162H – Introduction to Optics & Thermodynamics
  • PHYS 241 or 261H – Introduction to Electricity & Magnetism
  • PHYS 263H – Introduction to Relativity & Quantum Physics

Physics minors will need to complete two (6 units total) of Physics elective coursework from the following courses:

  • PHYS 305 – Computational Physics
  • PHYS 320 – Optics
  • PHYS 321 – Theoretical Mechanics
  • PHYS 331 – Electricity & Magnetism I
  • PHYS 332 – Electricity & Magnetism II
  • PHYS 371 – Quantum Theory I
  • PHYS 405 – Digital Electronic Techniques
  • PHYS 422 – Continuum Mechanics
  • PHYS 431 – Molecular Biophysics
  • PHYS 472 – Quantum Theory II

Notes

All of these required courses, even PHYS 141/161H, have math course prerequisites. Also, a lot of upper-division physics courses have prerequisites of math and other physics – the majority of physics minors will also need to take PHYS 204 – Mathematical Techniques in Physics.
