This scholarship was made possible thanks to a generous gift from the family of Dale Shellhorn.
Dale received his MS in Physics from the UA in 1960. Quotes from former CoS Dean Joaquin Ruiz:
"After graduating from the UA, he went on to have an impressive career with NASA, and then later with The Boeing Company and Northrop Aircraft. Dale credits his success to the education that he received at the UA. He is considered one of the pioneers in mapping the moon. While he was part of the NASA development team working on the Lunar Orbiter Program, they worked tediously taking many photos to discover the ideal spot for the Apollo Landing. While searching for the landing site, they also photographed about all of the moon's 14 million square miles of surface, which had never been observed before. This discovery helped astronauts pave the way for many future endeavors. During this search, he not only found this key landing site, but also took the historical first photos of Earth from the moon, which became known as “Earth Rise” and was referred to as the “Photo of the Century.”
Dale leading roles in the B-1B and B-2 bomber programs, as well as developed an autonomous transportation system called the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit (MPRT) system that moves students between parts of the West Virginia University campus while minimizing transit times and reducing automobile traffic. This efficient system is still in use today, forty years after its inception. Dale Shellhorn was the College of Science Alumnus of the Year in 2018.
